Packaging Predictions for 2022

The new year is around the corner, with new beginnings and surprises. The same applies to the print and packaging industry, which has taken many turns and changes since the pandemic hit. We feel that 2022 holds more hope, with the global vaccine rollout and progressive consciousness on how to prevent the Covid-19 disease.

With this in mind, we look forward to 2022 with a refreshed outlook on our lives in general. In this blog post, we look at our 2022 predictions for the packaging industry. We hope that you are as excited as we!

Compostable and sustainable packaging

This is not a new concept, the eco-friendly and enviroment-conscious conversation has been happening for the past few years. We expect this conversation to not only remain but amplify. Between 2020 and 2021, together with the pandemic, the feeling of dystopia set in globally, heightening the urgency for things to change in how we interact with the planet. Needless to say, there has been a profound increase since 2020 in brands’ and companies’ tangible changes in their packaging, such as shopping bags and single-use plastic.

Shifting from plastic to more sustainable material is something we at Impress Printers are focused on; like using cardboard.

Emotion, story-telling, the human element

Once again, relevant to the global crisis that set in two years ago, and the isolation that came with it, has increased people’s need for human interaction and emotion in general. This has bled quite incredibly into the print and packaging world, as well as brands’ ethos, social media channels and design strategies.

We predict that this concept will see an increase in 2022, with more intergrated emotional design through typography, imagery and fun layouts.

Texture, special finishes such as foiling and embellishment

With a massive increase of competition across markets, there are so many choices on the shelves. Now more than ever, it is imperative that your product stands out. Creating beautiful and unique packaging using special finishes is something we expect to see more of in 2022.

Functional and simple

Something which we hammer on a lot is the power of simplicity in design. Simple and effective design saw a pretty major increase in 2020/2021, especially in beauty and lifestyle brands. The idea of presenting only essential information, through minimal design adds the feeling on trustworthiness and no nonsense ingredients and intention of the product. We predict that simple design and a focus on functionality will continue to dominate such industries in 2022.
